Blog Announcement –The Doc is in the House

While you have been upping your reps and downing your shakes, we’ve been busy building an underground tunnel to awesome, which is code for networking with some really cool people. People who are outstanding in their field, smarter than the average bear, you know…trend setters.

This week, we sat down with NHL strength and conditioning coach/director of fitness for The Winnipeg Jets, Craig Slaunwhite to pick his brain, get to know him better and let’s face it, who doesn’t want to learn from the best. So, let’s get right into it.

Dr. Craig Slaunwhite

BL – Craig, can you tell us what a typical day in your life looks like?

CS – I wake up at 7:00 a.m. If I’m lucky! My kids usually wake me up before then. I have a protein shake get the kids breakfast and am out the door. Then I drive straight to the rink where I eat breakfast, work with players on pre-game prep, as well as rehab, and meet with the chef to plan meals for the next few days. I have lunch at the rink, drive home and spend time with my family from 1 – 4:00 p.m. Then I head back to the rink to get the players ready for game, train injured and non-playing players. I workout between 7:30-9:00 p.m., prepare for post-game training session with players, get more food and head home. I take 20 minutes to unwind and head to bed around 11:30 p.m.

BL – What are you most passionate about/What inspires you?

CS – I am most passionate about trying to be a great family man. I also hold myself to the highest fitness and nutrition standards, and aspire to grow professionally.

BL – What are your health/fitness non-negotiables?

CS –  I only eat food that improves my health, which means I don’t just choose food on taste alone. (True story! We heard recently Craig turned down $3,000 to eat a cupcake. $3,000??!!!) I love being disciplined about my diet. (#awesome) And, I will do everything I can to never go more than one day a week without lifting.

BL – What is your favourite guilty pleasure?

CS – This makes me sound like a nerd, but…protein bars and shakes are my pleasures. I guess the guilt comes in with the quantities.

BL – What song is a must on your workout playlist?

CS – If I really want to get jacked up or if I’m trying a new personal record, my go-to songs are ‘Voodoo’ and ‘I Stand Alone’ by Godsmack. I know these songs are a bit heavy (and dark), but they get me going. Otherwise I like to listen to a lot of Linkin Park, Audioslave, the Zac Brown Band, Chris Stapleton, Metallica, Guns and Roses, and the occasional Jay Z/90’s rap.

So there you have it. Straight from the doctor’s mouth…know your boundaries, always try to be your best. #bodyawesome
